Our current food system is characterized by high usage of energy and waste throughout all phases. By 2050 as most of the world’s population will live in cities, waste management is a top priority. Food waste in Iran can be traced in the main domains of food processing, eating habits, culture of hospitality ,buying more items than actual need, household food waste and public culture. Having access to nutritious food is the right of every human. In 1996 the Food and agriculture organization of the United Nations wrote that food security occurs when when food systems operate so that all people, at all times, have physical and economic to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy lifestyle. Still many city residents to fresh food retail in their neighborhood, having to either travel a far distance or choose to eat less nutritious alternatives. Urban and peri-urban agriculture refers to the process of producing any agricultural product in the cities or their suburbs, which can include growing food (vegetables, legumes, mushrooms and even meat and dairy products), medicinal plants, shrubs and ornamental plants. . It also covers a variety of techniques and approaches. some benefits include :Socially: Increasing social interactions, vitalizing the urban public spirit, creating educational opportunities, food security, creating pleasant public spaces Environmentally: Use of food waste, Creates an efficient landscape, Improving biodiversity, Use of urban rainfall water, Economically: Relatively reduces food prices, Cost-effectiveness as urban landscapes, creating new occupations. But challenges need to be addressed in order to move forward with this method. Challenges such as Urban soil contamination leading to consumption, finding reliable water resources, urban climatic changes, limited lateral space and high land values as an obstacle to scale up inspite of massive population growth, viability, theft and vandalism, loss and damage of crops, negative concepts and perceptions of peri-urban and urban agriculture, and the lack of experienced skilled labor and management.; to name a few. Located in the outskirts of Tehran, the capital of Iran,in the “Safadasht industrial city”.The majority of the population's livelihood is provided through agriculture, industry and service sectors. There are also activities such as livestock and fish farming. The “Eram industrial complex” is one of many poultry farms of this inductrial city. This complex consists of a poultry and wheat farm. There are two main reasons why a poultry farm, a highly popular industry in the region, was chosen as the project site to accommodate a residential community in an industrial zone. From the owner’s perspective the reason for workers to reside inside the facility is the quarantine matter. It is necessary for the workers to have the least possible contact with the outside of the complex because they could easily transfer various diseases to the chickens therefore cause a lot of damage(e.g. influenza subtype H5N1,H9N1, Newcastle…). The workers on the other hand, prefer residing in the premises due to financial issues and immigration matters. This residential community is to meet the social and cultural needs of this specific families, while providing them food security through urban farming. The first step is to specify the needed spaces. For the cultural and social background, the spaces need to divided into three main zones. The private, semi-private and public zones.Knowing that poultry farming is one of the most popular and common occupations in this region,, this pattern can be executed in other farms of this or other industrial cities of this climate; Therefore causing positive environmental, financial and social impacts on this community and their surroundings. which can lead to more resilient and self-sufficient future neighborhoods and ultimately cities.
