The project aims to create a new campus for the Catholic University of Pernambuco. The site is located in the neighborhood of Beberibe, in the city of Olinda. The main design idea is to integrate the new campus with the local community by addressing the building as a connector.
One of the main strategies is to incorporate the complexity of the surrounding environment into the new campus by applying the systemic concepts of Mat-building and Clusters because of their ability to adapt to different site conditions.
Through the voids identified in the local woods, matbuilding blocks were implanted in a grid generated by the existing buildings, integrating the new building massing with the landscape.
The campus is about 4000m² as a whole. The proposal focuses on the educational and administrative components. We used mainly structural steel, concrete and drywall systems for walls, and on the façades glass panels with metallic brise-soleil to help protecting the interiors from the intense tropical sunlight.
The project was advised by professors Ana Rolim and Andrea Câmara
