Project idea

The main aim of this project is to create an artistic environment following the sustainability, eco-friendly and traditionality with the natural materials and traditional technology with the fusion with modern technique.
This project aims to give a good quality training and classes for all the peoples who are in dark side of the society like Raped girls, Homeless children’s, differently able peoples (people who are in the wheelchair), all the interested people who wants. Although this project named as ART AND CRAFTS CENTRE but we can get a good quality education, communication and vocational training and arts and crafts trainings which can create a way of life. It has working spaces with required systematic and scientific technologies, skills imparted to them through training, afterward manufacturing their own products, running their enterprises, and generating employment opportunities for other similar populations.
The buildings also have the full facilities required for the differently able people which creates the easy life inside the building.

Project description

The site is located at Koteswor, Kathmandu, Nepal. It covers an area of 4069.9 square meters. The building consists of crafts center, art center, shopping area, book library, museum, exhibition hall, seminar halls, art workshop hall, café and accommodation for the guest including hostel and VIP rooms.
As we enter to main gate, we see a good parking, building gate made from wood and concrete and a great logo as (ATTICUS) which gives the name of the craft center. Taking a left turn takes us to the parking are where we can have the number of bikes, cycle and cars to get park and a public toilet of both men and women.
Opening at the middle of land including a tree under which the statue of BUDDHA reflects the feel of worships which is covered with three parametric structure includes solar panels at the top. This panel generates the solar power which is used in the building itself. This green courtyards at the center of the building with natural light and ventilation will host specific public activities, events, art and craft exhibitions, and product fairs will take place in the courtyard.
Ramps near every entry to the all building provides the easier walk for the old age people, children and differently able peoples. Stairs steps can be taken by every healthier peoples.
Wooden carved windows and doors reflects the Nepali craft traditional which combine with glasses. Roof cladding with Tera-Cota tiles on the museum block, Aankhe-jhya on the library block and hotel block, makes the building to sine like modern art including tradition.
Technically build parametric bamboo structure above the art workshop and open roof garden above the shops area creates the green space for reading purpose and bamboo structure gives the parametric view to the entire design.
To maintain the green space there we have harvested a different type of bamboos at the backward or hotel block, this bamboo is also used in the crafts making like handicrafts. The same bamboo parametric structure is also made with the same bamboos using modern techniques and installed with modern technology.

Technical information

Irregular placement of the building plans is to maintain REGULARITY INSIDE IRREGULARITY which is also a part of my concept. Although placement is in irregular pattern, standing blocks gives a good regular view around the surroundings. All the building placed at the outward of the land making the southern part of bldg. of low height and creating open space at the middle is to maintain good natural lighting and air flow around the surroundings.
Materials used like natural wood carved with Nepali craft workers, glass, bamboo structures, natural bricks, concretes to make the structure. The building height is only about the 2 – 3 storey is to maintain the FAR of Nepal because Nepal is also an earthquake affected area.
The solar panel at the middle of the open space and the southern slope angle of hotel blocks generates ta huge solar power which makes the building run with solar energy.
This whole design also follows the sustainable design and green building design too.
