This project tends to identify various problems for student accommodation and design a concept that may help the demands for student housing as well as providing a well-integrated space catering to the student population in the Kathmandu valley.
To design as a “REFERENCE PROJECT” for student accommodation in Nepal.
The main idea is to create an off-campus student accommodation to fulfill the need of the newer generation of students as well as creating a community-based design for an individual student to find their individuality as well as create a sense of community at the same time."
The site is located in the core city where the student's population were concentrated and has good access to Roads and public vehicles route.
Near to major institutions- private and public universities. As well as an emerging social hub.
It’s important to focus on the interaction and communication between the users of student housing, where not only essential use of housing is applied, but also the communal features of such buildings, transforming it into the student hub. For this, the program is formulated by assigning different layers of special layers according to the use and privacy of the given space. The transition between the public and the private spaces is taken in mind while dividing the space.
Another main focus is done in order to depart from the conventional approach of student accommodation and to interwoven with the community.
• Diverging from a Hermetic/isolated way of life and integrating a wide community.
• Spaces and resources that could be shared for social, practical, and sustainable reasons for the ones living there but also be used by the public.
Combination of modular components in open and flexible systems. Because of the modularity of the blocks, they can be arranged within a grid in different configurations and stack up vertically resulting in varied forms of outcomes. Different arrangements of modules are possible as per the different requirements of students and site
This provides a flexible design idea that can be implemented in different sites in many projects. It also helps to create central communal spaces in between modules.
Design solution by integrating different modules and creating a varied built- form with different level terraces, integrating it with various courtyard and public spaces as well as varied ceiling height and double-height spaces creates space for interaction, as well as integration of community and student community.
This design consists of various lounges as communal spaces for students and study corners are placed on each floor for the students to have a space to study interactively hence, creating an environment for social activity as well as sharing knowledge.
Building Should Represent Its Primary Users- The users are youth students so it should signify. Youthfulness, Openness, Playfulness, Modern. Something Exciting but Also Inviting. For this, I have used different colors in the balcony (yellow and aqua colors) helps to create a fun environment without overpowering the simplicity of the design and other materials.
Hence, a design of five floors of student accommodation with a community center and all the amenities is created for nearly 300 students.
