The dusty glory of industry can be seen and felt at every step in Ostrava. Remains of chimneys, factories and pipelines can be found among the houses and trees. Some of the most bulky artefacts of heavy industry, however, can be easily overlooked, overgrown. We're talking about the Heaps. Some are burning, others have been extinguished. Is it possible to relight an uninhabited area?

The project dealing with the habitation of the Hrabůvka heap, located inside the city of Ostrava, lets the heap stand out, but also domesticates it.

The proposed perimeter development leaves a large park at its heart. Stretching two to several storeys, the house with its variable functions clearly defines the park, encloses it and opens it up to its surroundings. It uses curves to clearly define the character of the outdoor space, from public spaces to private front gardens. Towards the river, the winding serpent opens up where it connects to the potential of the waterfront. A towering landmark rises above the west bank of the Halda, which has been delineated by stretching the sightlines from the surrounding area. The site, its neighbourhood and the whole of Ostrava thus acquire, in the tangle of chimneys, a new landmark.

The Halda is connected to car, public, cycling and pedestrian transport. The circulation of motor vehicles remains along the perimeter. The centre of the heap belongs to pedestrians and cyclists. Newly constructed footbridges lead to the heap, connecting to the existing urban infrastructure.

Anotace

Zaprášená sláva průmyslu jde v Ostravě vidět i cítit na každém kroku. Mezi domy i stromy nalézáme pozůstatky komínu, továren či potrubí. Jedny z nejobjemnějších artefaktů těžkého průmyslu však lze lehce přehlédnout, zarostly. Řeč je o Haldách. Některé hoří, jiné vyhasly. Je možné neobydlené území znovu rozzářit?

Projekt zabývající se obydlením haldy Hrabůvky, která se nachází uvnitř města Ostravy, nechává haldu vyniknout, ale také ji ochočuje.

Navržená zástavba po obvodu nechává rozlehlý park v samém srdci. Táhnoucí se dvou až několika podlaží dům s proměnnými funkcemi park jasně vymezuje, uzavírá i otevírá do okolí. Pomocí zákrut jasně definuje charakter venkovního prostoru, od veřejných prostranství po soukromé předzahrádky. Směrem k řece se vinoucí had otevírá, kde navazuje na potenciál nábřeží. Nad západním břehem Haldy se tyčí výšková dominanta, která byla vytyčena protažením pohledových os z okolí. Místo, jeho sousedství i celá Ostrava tak získává, ve změti komínů, nový orientační bod.

Komunikačně je Halda napojena na automobilovou, hromadnou, cyklistickou i pěší dopravu. Cirkulace motorových vozidel zůstává po obvodu. Střed haldy patří pěším a cyklistům. K haldě vedou nově vybudované pěší lávky, navazující na stávající městskou infrastrukturu.
