1. STRENGTHS: The candidate is able to identify the opportunities presented by the existing site through mapping; nodal activities caused by axis and paths. Subsequently, choses a subtle [conservative and pragmatic] approach which celebrates and preserves the existing context, as informed by the site analyses.
2. SHORTCOMINGS:
2.1. The candidate proposes the redesign of the existing square without entering into a theoretical argument; in-order to rationalize redesigning over maintenance of the existing layout.
2.2. A good proportion of grass [green surface] reduction on the new design is proposed without getting into merits of such an approach.
2.3. The selection and analyses of architectural precedent studies [representing similar campus architecture] could benefit the project.
3. CREDIBILITY OF ARGUMENT: The argument is credible within the previously mentioned “shortcomings’.
4. DESIGN RESOLUTION:
4.1. The candidate exhibits great control and command of the ordering\layering of spaces. The stage/fountain [creates a focal point on the existing axis] dominates the functional subdivisions. The axis also creates a continuous datum connecting the existing larger-square to the fountain/stage and the spotlight-gate.
4.2. The subtle scale of the new architectural mass and its materiality exhibits humility by blending into the context.
4.3. The mapping and site analyses simulates an appropriate solution.
5. TECHNICAL INFORMATION: The candidate’s ‘technical investigation’ is not intensively explored like his peers\ competitors. The control and command of these aspects is not displayed convincingly in this project.
6. GENERAL COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
6.1. Indicate drop-off [urban connectivity] along pedestrian access [spotlight-gate].
6.2. Further develop the design and detail material.
