Designing cultural and educational centers is an urgent task facing architects around the world. The modern request for such an architecture today largely corresponds to the basic urban principles based on making the comfortable urban environment in the historical part of cities. The Somaye Talebi project for the capital of Iran Tehran was no exception. The building of the center is located in the Laleh Park, next to the Museum of Modern Art. The geometric volumes of the building correspond to the smooth lines of the park zone, decorating the urban area.
The concept of shaping the “5 cubes” structure is based on the combination of cubic volumes entering into each other at different angles and the construction of the separate cube of the prayer house, turned upside down and entered into the surface of the earth with one face. The building is a constructive structure, where individual cubic volumes rise one by one from the foundation to the roofs, forming an interconnected system of spaces connected by a central internal staircase.
I would like to draw your attention how the author puts the motifs of traditional Iranian ornaments into the design solution of the interior and facades, giving importance to the national culture. The ornament is closely connected to the development of the national culture. It shows the aesthetic and meaningful contexts of the era, spiritual and material peculiarities of the culture. The meaning of the ornaments is much more than just “beautifulness”. In fact, that is the reason why they catch eye of the visitors at once, even if the epoch ceased to exist centuries ago.
The project shows the idea of creating a space for the communication. Communication is the main means of getting new knowledge. The functional division into zones of the cultural and educational center envisages making the recreational and public areas of the building. There it’ll be possible to create comfortable conditions for communication and building new ties between people. Here we can talk about an amphitheater, a comfortable cafe, a library, a gallery, workshops, transit zones and the area around.
The architect pays special attention to the natural daylight, which is provided by the slots in the glass roofs and side facades with the ornaments of the building. All this creates a pleasant light and cosy shade atmosphere and air conditioning. The eco-trend is traced in the choice of the main structural and finishing material - wood.
The project is based on the modern architectural approach connected to the traditional culture of Iran.
