"Scales of Nature" unfolds amidst the rugged geological formations of Iceland, providing an ideal canvas to explore the interplay between architectural phenomenology and the natural environment. Central to the project is the strategic incorporation of bodies of water, which serve as focal points for both layout and circulation. Mirroring the fluidity of water, the project's design elements—such as crevasses and cantilevering rocks—intertwine with the landscape, blurring boundaries and fostering a sense of continuity.
While the visual spectacle is undeniable, the project falls short in delineating the distinct character of each space. Rather than showcasing a variety of environments, it presents a homogenous landscape of misty pools within cavernous settings, overlooking opportunities to integrate different states of water into the programming. By incorporating natural, purified, or treated water, the project could have crafted diverse pool types, each with its own narrative informed by the surrounding landscape.
Materiality, anchored by concrete, stone, and ice, remains somewhat ambiguous in its integration beyond a superficial application of shotcrete. Given the project's focus on the intersection of natural and artificial, a more deliberate tectonic approach could have been employed. For example, varying the ratio of natural to artificial materials could have influenced the fluidity of architectural elements, echoing the dynamic relationship between solidity and fluidity found in nature. By intertwining greenery with the material palette, the project could have reinforced its thematic exploration of natural and artificial materials in harmony with water bodies.
In summary, while "Scales of Nature" offers an aesthetically captivating experience that embodies the synthesis of nature and humanity, deeper consideration of programming and materiality could elevate its engagement with Icelandic nature and culture.
