Cairo is an urban and architectural dense city. The country's urbanization along the Nile corridor and the intense architectural development in Cairo could have inspired the designer. In this project, the idea of transitioning from historically rich streets to an ARCHIAM Center is a successful one. The design enhances the functionality of the existing square by embedding programs into the underground space.
Conceptual Approach and Scenario: Activating a potential square and integrating an ARCHIAM Center is a strong design move. However, the originality of the design, aside from being a steel structure produced in a contiguous manner, is debatable. The design takes its form based on the façade of the adjacent structure. This design decision does not necessarily equate to an approach that integrates with the historical fabric in every case. Additionally, a more valid justification could be sought to cover one façade of a historic building. Transforming such a space into a true square by embedding all above-ground programs and minimizing the built-up area on the ground was a missed opportunity.
The claims stated in the project report, such as:
"This material choice reflects Cairo’s historical penchant for bold and expressive architectural elements. It symbolizes the city’s blend of tradition and modernity and connection to the past while embracing contemporary design trends, making it a significant material in the city’s ongoing architectural narrative."
are weakly reflected in the project itself.
Design Language:
Egypt’s rich cultural heritage, from ancient times to the medieval Islamic period, should serve as an inspiration for contemporary design. However, merely integrating geometric figures into the façade is not sufficient to achieve this.
Spatial Program:
The ARCHIAM Center program is well-defined and adequately resolved. The spatial relationships, level differences, and accessibility for disabled users are effectively addressed.
Use of Representation Tools:
Plans, sections, diagrams, and 3D visualizations are well-executed. However, the repeated use of the same human figures in every render is not ideal. Additionally, room labels should be included in the plans and sections.
Dear Gizem Özkan Üstün,
Thank you so much for the detailed feedback you provided for out project. We will certainly use this to further improve our future designs.
Have a great day!
Rawan :)
