Work description

Development of Data Acquisition Systems for Fundamental Physics ResearchPhysics research projects are usually designed to generate an immense amount ofdata, which requires very advanced readout systems for data acquisition andprocessing. We develop such systems based on heterogeneous System on a Chip(SoC) devices with multiple processors, programmable logic (FPGA) and optionallyeven digital to analog and analog to digital converters on a single chip. These devicesconsiderably minimize the development effort for new systems by allowing a largepercentage of the hardware, firmware, and software to be reused in a variety ofexperiments. You have the opportunity to get an insight and to contribute to the development ofstate of the art readout electronics for a variety of physics experiments. We can offer awide range of possible topics to meet your personal interests and skills. The high luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will enable eventsat a higher rate and at higher collision energies. This entails new challenges for thedetectors and the connected readout electronics. As part ofInternational collaborations, we are developing high-throughput readout electronics forthe Phase-2 upgrade of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector, capable ofprocessing multiple Tb/s of data per card.Within this project, you could contribute to the embedded Linux software infrastructureand the FPGA firmware for the electronics card. Furthermore, you could contribute tothe comprehensive and modular custom build framework we are designing to speed-up the development of systems running embedded Linux.
