The Current Condition of the Object : The current state and capacity of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design is not in compliance with current requirements for high-quality university education, including various facilities, such as canteen, parking lots, leisure zones (their absence is of indirect negative impact on the students’ community), or students’ accommodation. Another reason to create the Art Campus of Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, 2018 project is the lack of educational centers and technological facilities. According to these criteria, teachers and students will be provided a given space to create creative and implementation processes. – „The artist should never try to be popular. Rather the public should be more artistic. That is the true difference.“ – Oscar Wilde As the fine arts are visual arts, the aesthetic values are emphasized and applied as an important parameter of the Art Campus of Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava project.

Philosophy: The layout of the building surfaces creates a linear form that communicates within individual extensions and approaches the basic concept of rectangular shape. Respecting the mass of the original structure and preserving the rhythmical shaping of the facade is decently connected with the newly created object. Mass Concept : Adaptation of the mass to the height limit created three parts of rectangular character. The objects are simultaneously connected by a connecting corridor that crosses over two above-ground floors. The height differences in the terrain are covered by stairs and ramps for visitors or students. They create a park exposition of artworks placed in the exterior with additional zones created for resting and leisure activities. The overall view of the proposed concept is based on respecting the lines of the studio buildings while making a space at the lower floors level for optical relocation of the greenery under the building and optimizing positive views. Urban Solution of the Zone: The main idea of the whole urban-architectural solution is the construction of the modern Art Campus, which will meet the basic requirements for accommodation and education of students. The main aspects that were applied in the proposal were orientation towards the world's parties, respecting the capacity of the land and considering the zoning plan. Functioning Layout Solution: The layout is considerably determined by the location of the main purpose buildings above the level of the terrain, except for the technological pavilion, which is straightly connected to the workrooms, the warehouse and the supply zone. Object supply is designed on two routes. The first route is designed for small-capacity objects and leads through an underground car park. The second route goes under the library and is designed for high-capacity objects, i. e. import of large technological equipment, material of above-standard size (clearance height is 8 m). The premises of the technological pavilion are designed as a free space for the possibility of arbitrary placement of some dividing structures and the creation of technological workplaces. The natural lighting of the pavilion is provided by 5 skylights. Underground parking with a capacity of 146 mixed parking lots has reserved residential parking for the dean's room and the rector's office. There is also an indoor bike park. The current main entrance is defined as secondary. The proposed representative entrance is situated by intersection of the compositional axis of the exterior ramp and the stairway, which leads to the entrance hall through the vestibule. Another part of the first floor is a café with a bookstore, a reception and a cloakroom for students. A lecture hall is accessible from the second floor above the level of the first floor. Students are located on the sides of the lecture hall and so they have an open optical contact with their lecturer. The interconnecting corridor, which can be used for vernissages and exhibitions of artworks, connects the second floor of the dormitory with the building, which includes a canteen students and school staff. The canteen is connected to the already existing building in the compound, which forms a leisure time zone. Entrance to the dormitory is controlled at the reception. The third floor was divided into three ground plans, including an academic library (occupying the fourth floor as well, connected with the staircase), a study room, a rector's office, a dean's room, a students' accommodation and a common room with access to two terraces. The fourth floor composes of study rooms with connected to the library and a special pavilion designated for the rectorate. The dormitory floor is standardized on the fifth floor. From the second to fifth floor of the dormitory, the height of the room is changed from 3.6 meters to 2.8 meters and thanks to this step it was possible to create a fifth floor above the height limit of the building. Consequently, the capacity of the accommodation is increased and the spare room is created.

Technické informácie

Technical Equipment : The water supply of the new facilities will be connected to the existing water supply network with the piping for the dormitory building. The sewage drainage is arranged by a sewerage connection to the current drainage pipeline, and the sewage water outlet will be made of PVC-U. The premises of academic library and lecture hall are lit by natural lighting provided by five opening skylights. The lighting of the premises and artworks uses LED technology fitted in ceiling rails for flexible use. Natural lighting is provided in the interconnecting corridor by circular shaped windows. The construction will have a retrofitted system of photovoltaic panels, which will partly produce electricity. This will be directed to the batteries and to the hot water heater. Using photovoltaics will reduce the cost of electricity. Energy shortages will be handled by a connection to the distribution network. With above-average panel performance, power is transferred to the public network. Material Solution : In accordance with the philosophy of sustainable architecture, a wooden cladding in the vertical direction i placed on the perimeter walls of the object. Thanks to the use of glass skylights and large glass panels, we have gained the maximum natural interior lighting. For the construction of the supporting and dividing structures, POROTHERM bricks and reinforced concrete are used, except for the exhibition hall where a steel beaded castellated beams with steel pillars were used without ceiling to highlight the circular element of the construction.
