SEMIFINAL JUROR: Wandile Sibandze
1. STRENGTHS: It is a beautiful and professionally prepared document. It is clear that the subject matter is well understood and researched by the candidate and that it is close to his ‘heart’ and sensibilities. The candidate presented the realities of the chosen site well and with insight.
2. SHORTCOMINGS: The exploration of relationship between a heritage\ historic context [Dem Market] and the new intervention to address genius loci is not interrogated to any extent.
3. CREDIBILITY OF ARGUMENT: The candidate presents a credible and pragmatic dual-concept aimed at addressing the prevalent issues of concern [pollution] within the limits of the research. He understands the significance of the symbiosis between the natural environment, the built environment, and the economy.
4. DESIGN RESOLUTION: The design is brought to an exemplary resolution and he is able to communicate the pragmatic approach and methodology of project delivery of his proposals convincingly.
5. TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Acceptable.
6. GENERAL COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
6.1. Enlarge and annotate the master-plan to a legible size.
6.2. Include scale-bar, north-point, and section-line on master-plan.
6.3. Street sections are too diagrammatical and lack reference.
6.4. Consider cycling lanes, where possible.
6.5. It’s difficult to understand the city's silhouette in the absence of the figure-ground.
6.6. Consider adding a traffic flow diagram.
6.7. Consider restraining the amount of trees to create a contrast of urban enclosures.
6.8. Consider safety when designing elevated pathways.
6.9. The project seems to be monolithic\reserved in its application of materiality and texture.
6.10. Address parking requirements as per the planning code.
Dear Wandile Sibandze,
I really appreciate your thoughtful feedback on my project.
I acknowledge areas for improvement, especially in the analysis of the relationship between the historical context and the new intervention, the street profiles, the adjustment of the number of buffer trees and the proposed public parking lots.
Your insights into the feasibility of the project are invaluable and I will work hard to improve the shortcomings you have highlighted.
Your feedback has been instrumental in improving the project, enhancing its feasibility and adding to the experience of myself and my team members in future projects.
Thank you and best regards,
Khanh Duy and team.
